SARAH – SARAH: uSer-centred civil infrAstructure Reliable Assessment and Healing

Information

About project

The maintenance of civil infrastructuressuch as roads and railways – is one of Europe’s key challenges, especially in a context of ageing infrastructure, environmental pressure, and sustainability demands.
SARAH, a European project funded under Horizon Europe, addresses these challenges by developing advanced digital tools for predictive maintenance and data sharing in the civil infrastructure sector.
Thanks to innovative solutions based on interoperability, artificial intelligence, sensor technology and digital twins, SARAH aims to improve the efficiency, safety and sustainability of infrastructure management in Europe. The project promotes a systemic and collaborative approach that enables data-driven decision-making and prevents emergency interventions through scheduled and intelligent maintenance.

Objectives

Project objectives

Develop interoperable digital tools to improve predictive maintenance of civil infrastructure.

Facilitate efficient data sharing among different stakeholders in the sector.

Adopt solutions based on digital twins, sensors and artificial intelligence to support data-driven decision-making.

Map existing standards and promote the development of new pre-normative documents to fill identified gaps.

Strengthen dialogue between research, industry and standardization bodies at the European level.

Results

Concrete actions

SARAH promotes a systemic approach to infrastructure management by integrating:

  • Intelligent monitoring systems based on advanced sensor technology.
  • Predictive models to assess asset conditions and schedule interventions.
  • A digital toolkit for standardization, useful for companies, public authorities and policy makers.
  • The involvement of European technical committees CEN/TC 319 and CEN/TC 350 to foster future standardization.
  • The definition of a new CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) to address the emerging standardization needs of the sector.
